Sampathgiri swayambhu Arulmugu Lakshmi Narashima swami malai kovil
A trip to Swayambhu Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Polur. This hill temple is popularly known as Perumal hill temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha swami.
Polur is a town located in the Thiruvannamalai district of Tamilnadu. Polur is located around 33 km away from the main town of Thiruvannamalai.
Sampathgiri Swayambhu Arulmigu Lakshmi Narasimha swami hill temple is a very peaceful and popular temple that can be visited to attain bliss and refreshment in life.
I have been to Polur many times but I couldn’t get a chance to visit to this hill temple.
But this time God blessed me and I got a chance to visit the hilltop temple and seek the blessings of the Lord Narasimha. This temple has to be visited only in the mornings since the priest comes here to perform Pooja and offerings only in the morning.
The legend says that there were workers who were working on the hilltop to broke the rocks apparently, it started bleeding in the midst of stone and when noticed it had the Swayambu Narashima moorthy. The workers apologised to the lord and performed poojas and here after the people started here to seek the blessing of the lord. Later the temple was built and the paths were carved to the hilltop.
It is a very popular temple and it is said that the sincere prayers of the devotes are accepted by the lord and there is always a fruitful result after seeking the blessing of the Lord Narasimha.
On occasions, there are small Pooja item shops at the foot of the hill. On regular days one has to buy the Pooja items from the main town since there are no shops around the entrance at the foot of the temple.
The temple can be reached by climbing the steps that are carved in the mountain and a few steps are constructed using cement for ease of climbing up.
We have to start by praying at the Hanuman temple that is located right at the foot of the hill. The lord hanuman is said to be a very powerful god who grants the boon of the devotees who throng here.
There is a huge banyan tree that is very old and is a shelter for a number of birds, monkeys and other species of reptiles and insects.
There are three mandaps that are built to mark the quarter, half and three fourth of the hill for the devotees to sit for a while and rest.
There is a huge cave known as Yanai gugai (Elephant cave)where one of the saints is said to have lived and performed meditation to the lord to seek his blessings.
After the third mandap, there is a small Hanuman temple that is carved out of the hill.

This hill is also one of the beautiful trekking spots around Thiruvannamalai that has many scenic beauties around it.
The view of the surrounding hills and a lake at the bottom of the hill is a spectacular view. On the other side there are villages around the hill and it is also a beautiful view.
There are a number of monkeys in the hill and you are advised to keep your things safe.

Polur can be reached from Chennai through direct buses or the route buses that pass through Polur.Polur can be reached by buses that run from Thiruvannamalai, Aarni, Vellore that are the nearby towns that have bus frequency from major cities and towns like Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Bangalore, and others.
There are trains to Polur on particular days of the week. One can check the availability by checking the trains that run through and stop in Polur.
there is a Perumal temple that is located at the bottom on the other side of the hill that can be reached from the town of Polur.
