The temple is open for worship between the end of April to Kartik Purnima due to the extreme weather conditions there. At the time of winter, the idols are brought from Kedarnath to Ukhimath.

Lord Siva is known as Kedarnath (Lord of Kedar Khand) in this region.

The Kedarnath temple can be reached from Gaurikund by a 14 km trek. It is commonly believed that this temple was built by Adi Sankaracharya.

According to the legends, Nara and Narayana were the two incarnations of Lord Vishnu. They performed severe Tapasya in front of Badrikashraya and Bharat Khand, which were Shivalingam made from earth. Lord Shiva, impressed by their devotion appeared in front of them and told them to ask for a boon. Nar and Narayana asked Lord Shiva to take up permanent abode at Kedarnath as a Jyotirlingam.
