Omkareshwar Temple

Omkaeshwar, also known as mini Varanasi is an island that is naturally shaped in the form of an Om, a sacred Hindu symbol. This is one of the most popular pilgrimages in India and is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Omkaeshwar Temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga Shrines of Lord Shiva consists of two temple shrines. One is known as Omkaeshwar (Om-Maker-Lord) and the other is known as Amareshwar (Immortal Lord).

Legend of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple:

Omkaeshwar has its origin in the word Om and is one of the most holy sites in India. Thousands of devotees come to this place from all over India as well as abroad. One of the unique features of this temple is that it lies at the meeting points of the rivers Kaveri and Narmada.

According to the myths, Narada the son of God Brahma made a visit to Vindhya Parvat. Narada made Vindhya jealous of Mount Meru by telling him about its greatness. Vindhya started to worship Lord Shiva so that his wish to become greater than Meru could be fulfilled. Vindhya along with Lord Omkaeshwar worshipped parthivlinga for almost six months.

Lord Shiva pleased by his devotion and worship fulfilled his desired wish. God Shiva made Omkaeshwar and Amareshwar, the two parts of the lingas. Lord Shiva blessed Vindhya with the boon of growing but in one condition that he should not become a problem for Shiva’s devotees. Vindhya grew as per his wishes but was unable to fulfill the condition he was presented with.

As a result of which he obstructed moon and the sun. All deities asked sage Agastya for help and to find a solution for this problem. Agastya approached Vindhya along with his wife and convinced him not to grow till he and his wife return. The sage never returned and Vindhya stood there as it was and didn’t grow since then onwards.

The Omkaeshwar temple is built in Nagara style and Lord Shiva’s idol can be seen on top of the temple. Those who are ardent devotees of Lord Shiva should make a visit to this sacred shrine.
