Rameshwaram (55 Km)

Situated on the extreme southeastern limit of the Indian peninsula, this is the Mecca for Hindus. For a truly devout Hindu, the quest for salvation begins in Varanasi and culminates in Rameswaram. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, this is the place where Lord Rama sanctified by worshipping Siva after the war against Ravan, thus making it sacred to both Saivites and Vaishnavites. THE importance of modern-day Rameswaram arises from the fact that apart from being a major tourist attraction it is one of the leading marine centers of the South. There is an Indo- Norwegian fisheries project at Mandapam to help develop the fishing industry on modern lines.

Devipattinam (16 Km)

This is one of the sacred places for Hindus. Here the nine planets known as the Navabashanas in Sanskrit are immersed in the sea. Legends relate that Lord Rama worshipped here on his way to Sri Lanka.

Dhanushkodi (75 Km)

This is the southernmost tip of the Island of Rameswaram and is 2 km away from the railway station. Dhanushkodi was completely washed away by the cyclone during the year 1964. But the Kothandaramaswamy temple here is intact. This is believed to be the spot where Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana, surrendered to Lord Rama. In the temple are the idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and Vibhishana.

Kurusadai Islands (75 Km)

These islands are in the west of the Pamban Bridge and are about 20 km from the Rameshwaram Railway Station. The chain of the coral reefs surrounding the island makes it an ideal research area for biologists and a beautiful picnic spot for tourists. The marine life includes algae, sea cucumbers, crabs, starfish, sponges, etc. Contact the Fisheries Department for permission to visit these islands.

Oriyur (60 Km)

A famous Catholic church is located here.

Yervadi (25 Km)

A very sacred and celebrated dargah for Muslims is situated on the seashore here
