Famous Places to Visit in Rameswaram

Rameswaram is a seashore town of Tamilnadu, situated in the Pamban Island and separated from main Tamilnadu from Pamban Channel. Considered to be one of the holiest places of Tamilnadu, this place offers lots of attractions for tourist sightseeing. Here are 6 famous places to visit in Rameswaram.

1. Ramanathaswamy Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is a popular pilgrimage site in Tamilnadu. The deity is represented as lingam of Ramanathaswamy and it is also believed that Lord Rama worshipped at this temple to negate his sins. This temple is also a part of Char Dham pilgrimage of the Hindus. The current structure of the temple was built by Pandyas in the 12th century. Timings are 04.30 AM to 01.00 PM and 03.00 PM to 08.30 PM.


2. Agni Tirtham

This is a sacred beach and one of the Tirthas of Rameswaram. Pilgrims from all over the world throng to this place to have a holy bath and absolve their sins. People also come here to pay homage to the dead. Auspicious bathing days are during the new moon and full moon. Child-less couples who take a bath in this beach would be blessed with children. Timing to visit is 05.00 AM to 06.00 PM.

3. Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge

Better known as Pamban Bridge, this railway bridge was opened in 1914 and was considered the longest bridge till 2010. Another parallel road bridge was also constructed in 1988. This is the bridge that connects Rameswaram to mainland India. It consists of 143 pillars with each 220 feet in length and 100 tons in weight. A travel through this bridge is an once-in-a-lifetime experience.

4. Water Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary is a lovely paradise for bird lovers and tourists alike. The various water bodies around the island attract different kinds of birds. Even migratory birds from Europe and Australia make this sanctuary their home for breeding. This sanctuary is open on all days and the timing is 07.00 AM to 06.00 PM.

5. Burial Place of APJ Abdul Kalam

Though this is a recent addition of attraction to Rameswaram, it is worth a visit. The burial place is situated in Pei Karambu village of Ramanathapuram district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a memorial would be constructed at the place of burial. Timing to visit is 08.00 AM to 06.00 PM.

6. Dhanushkodi

This is an abandoned town situated at the southernmost tip of Pamban Island. This town was completely washed away in 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and only remains of the town are available for the tourists to see. Timing to visit this place 06.00 AM to 06.00 PM.
